    Yeah, I did that, too- when one rebuilds one's 5-speed, one should
notice that there are 2 different strength springs used to center the
shifter!  I didn't, and the 1-2 gate is HARD to cross, while the 5-R
gate spring isn't strong enough to push the lever over quickly.  So
sometimes I spank R when I downshift, and feel really dumb.  Twice,
because it makes me an amateur wrench, and also an amateur driver!
<grin>  And you know, it's even covered in the manual that I never look
at, except to maybe answer other peoples' e-mail questions  <still
grinning>
