Phil,

Repeat after me... "This is the DATSUN Roadster List, this is the.... " ;-)

Backfire in the exhaust (typical of all good running Datsun's when you let
off the gas pedal) is RICH.

Backfire in the intake... mixture is lean. Note it only does that when he
accelerates. Go buy him a can of Marvel Mystery Oil*. I love the smell
of that stuff. Pour a little into each dash pot on top of the SU carb.

On our little Datsun's you can even see two small groves for upper and lower
levels... on the SU just dump enough it so you can hear the "sluuuck" sound
as you drop in the top of the dashpot, then remove it again..

This will keep the SU piston from rising too quickly, leaning the mixture,
and causing that backfire.

The SU's are "tuned" by that spring inside the dome, and the oil in the dashpot.

For fun take him for a drive in the roadster, on nice fast corners! ;-)

If this works, tell him to send beer to... ;-)

Cheers,

Tom

P.S. I Oregon I used ATF Fluid, In Texas I find 20W is a better choice. Either
way I love the minty fresh smell of the Mystery Oil.
