i think they're just called "brakes."  the insertion of an adjective before 
that i believe refers to the use to which the particular brake was best 
suited.  for example, there were cars specially built by bentley, that looked 
like wagons, though the space in back housed two expensive shotguns.  the car 
was termed a "shooting brake." ( i saw one at the pebble beach concours one 
year).
