OSH, Orchard supply hardware, has foam in sheets and rolls. It comes in
various thicknesses. It is a very high density foam that glues very
well. I use it for a cushioned surface on my work benches.
It comes in black.
I have also used it successfully for my center console arm rest as
cushion underneath the vinyl.
I would imagine that it would work well for your purpose.
