A "ign switched" 12v wire should go into the resistor... then come out 7.5-9 
v the other side of it to feed your ign coil.   Don't know what year your car 
is, but that extra wire coming off the coil/resistor harness that goes back 
into the firewall on MY '70 is the "ign switched" 12v lead that goes back to 
the fuse box, feeding the TURN SIGNALS. Kinda nice to have those eh ?  The 
4-way flashers are on a separate circuit, as they are NOT switched through 
the ign. 

If you get a full 12v feeding the coil, your car will run for a bit, but will 
end up eating points sets. not a nice thing to have happen on the road. Make 
sure you get the proper voltage at the coil.
