Back fire rumble

List,

backfiring on a down shift or under compression braking on R16 with stock
SU's and exhaust is a symptom of what condition/s? Most likely anyway.
 A GB EI dizzy has been installed and timing set per installation
instructions. Car runs great under acceleration and at  cruising speeds. I'd
just like to know what I can do about the rumble and pop between gears.
