5th gear out of my '68-2000

Ken,
You most likely have the early fifth gear which is two pieces which were
furnace brazed and separate with age.  Any high performance VW  (Dune Buggy)
shop should know of someone who can weld it. (Common VW Buggy gear box
modification).  I had a splined 5th gear do the same thing because two lock
nuts on the main shaft came loose.  Just pressed them back together in a vice.
