hi toby, bob smith here. you seem to have done the right things to
prepare for separating the trans. the reason it is still stiff is, that 
there are two
bearings in the rear ext. that are a tight fit. one that has to come off of
the out put shaft, and one that has to come out of the ext. housing.
just keep working the housing off with a pair of big screwdrivers, opposite 
each other.
try not to scatch the mating surfaces.( you can dress the surfaces with a 
flat file).
are you doing a rear seal, or checking the 5th gear for being splined ?
