As long as you have an overall plan,
the cam's the heart of the motor.

But it has to work with the rest of it- there's no point 
in a 300 degree, 12mm cam if you're going to run 
stock carburetion and exhaust.

There's no point in 4" exhaust tubing if 
you run a stock cam.

And so on...  you have to look at flow from the air inlet through the 
tailpipe...

As you've said, putting on a package of improvements 
can really wake up a motor- and if you keep your
wits about you, you can do a significant 
amount of good with not much loss in drivability.

Sounds like fun!
