TechCrunch has a post today about Boompa, a new social networking site for car
enthusiasts. Michael Arrington talks about the brains behind the site, Ethan
Lance and Dave Snider, who both worked at CNET and a database project Boompa
has in the works. The main competition to Boomba would probably come from
CarSpace, a car enthusiast's social networking site from Edmunds which is
currently in Beta.
I think both of these products have a chance at success, but there is one
thing they need to take into account. Car enthusiasts are, for the most part,
enthusiastic about a model or make of car. What both of these sites need to
accomplish is bringing like-minded enthusiasts together to share information.
The hurdle they're going to have to jump is luring users from the firmly
entrenched sites these enthusiasts already flock to, like AudiWorld's forums.
These communities already exist on a model/make basis, and are wildly popular.
The forums are a social network in and of themselves. What Boompa and CarSpace
could provide is a home for profiles and photos, which users of these other
forums would then link to, but they're probably shooting higher than that. I'm
just not sure if the one-stop-shop auto social network is really going to
happen when enthusiasts are so segmented. b Brian Ward
