Was wondering if any listers had any experience with broken or cracked
jackshafts or worn timing gears and what symptoms they had. Despite all my
extensive list of efforts, including the replacement of the leaking exhaust
valve and trying different carburetors, jetting, new plug wires, new plugs,
different dizzy (points), rewiring, new EI spark module etc etc my miss
continues. According to the timing light it is not miss-firing so much as I
can tell and it does not vary much (the timing does not jump around more than
a degree) yet no degree of carburetor adjustment or jetting eliminates the
miss. It does seem to be intermittent or worse at times more than others,
suggesting spark. Yet when tested, the Jacobs system puts out a big fat blue
flame of a spark that can easily arc over an inch from the screwdriver
inserted in the spark plug wire to the body of the car with a loud "errack!".
For what it is worth, my timing chains, upper tensioner and cam gear are new,
and the other gears appeared to be in decent shape when I built the motor
about 15K miles ago (I know what to look for). What I would really like to do
is get this thing on a scope that can tell me IF it ever misses and what the
timing is really doing (better than a timing light can), but so far I have not
found anyone in this day and age of plug in on-board diagnostics that offers
such a service anymore. An exhaust analyzer might be helpful, but if my
problem is an ignition miss that would show up as a rich mix which could be
carb jetting as well, and like I said I have tried every combination of
jetting that I have to no avail and have played with the mixture screws at
different rpms to see if leaning or richening the carbs makes the miss go away
(nope). Also, if anyone has an old non-smog points distributor and set up
(resistor, etc) they are not using and would let me borrow I would be
grateful, as my friend's car is up and running and I don't like taking parts
off of his car anymore.
Finally, Daryl please contact me as I do not have your new email saved and I
want to talk to you about going distributorless.
Thanks!
Greg Burrows
