Have you attempted to adjust the slack out of the 'box to see if that solves
the problem?
The idler may also have slack in it.
Get the front wheels off the deck and observe all the round and round/up and
down bits while someone turns the wheel from lock to lock.
Then of course there are 6 ball joints that may be contributing to any
vagueness.
Removal is reasonably easy but you will need a Pitman Arm remover to get the
steering and idler arms off their respective devices and a good quality Ball
Joint remover to, you know, remove the ball joints ;)

"My random lane-changes on the freeway tell me it's time to repair or
replace the steering box on my '68 1600.
Any removal tips or tricks that would be good to know?  How much stuff do I
need to pull off to get at the box?
