To continue this discussion, I agree with others that simple flushing
with a solvent is likely to leave vital thrust surfaces unlubricated.

To revisit an old topic, the most important thing to check on the
four speed is the countershaft rod and roller bearings. This is the
shaft that supports the counter gear. The shaft tends to wear at
the bearing points, allowing it to tilt ever so slightly and putting the
counter gear at risk of breaking teeth. Been there, done that.
