Fellow Groupies...(Groupsters...)

With all the talk of axle failure of late, maybe this will ring a familiar
chord to someone, or maybe it's news...

Back in the olden days, when straight line stuff was what any red blooded,
monkey wrenchin kid wanted to do, we used to take our axles, strip them down
(no hubs, bearings etc), and put them in a carboard box full of dry ice. The
axle needed to be completely covered, top and bottom, we then covered the box
and let the dry ice evaporate, which usually took a day or more. This then
gave much fewer unwanted DNF's due to the ole axle breakage. I have of a
matter of course continued this application and perhaps this may have kept my
cars "greasy" side down for more miles than if I had not done it. Maybe this
is an old wives tale, urban legend or complete lunacy...I dunno, but the
metallurgists on the list may have a thought. Sorry I haven't brought this up
earlier, but I had forgotten all about it until I unpacked a box the other day
with a notation on an axle that it had already been "treated".

With the "coolest" axles in town...
