I'm sure some of the road racers will chime in, but for my autocross
car, the newer carbon brakes make a huge difference.  I was running
Porterfield pads which worked well, but left *huge* amounts of dust
(much of it apparently iron from the discs, since it would rust if
it got wet and would set up like concrete on the wheels if I left it
for too long).  I'm now using Carbotech pads on the front which work 
even better, but throw out much less dust.  I've got Hawk blues on
the rear and they work fine, but that's a much less critical
application for me.

Depends on the specific pad compound as far as I can tell.
