Hello all:

I hit a snag while overhauling a one-piece(long column)steering unit for my
early TR3. When assembling the unit, I could not get the front bearing race to
go in the hole for it on the end of the casting that forms the "box". I found
that the worm is not concentric with the bearing race hole in the casting,
preventing the race from going into place.

The housing for the unit is made of two pieces: a long tube forming the
steering column welded to the casting that forms the box where the worm lives.
Just eyeballing the unit shows that the casting is at an angle to the column.
The casting is pulled away from the weld on the outside of the bend and the
tube is slightly buckled on the inside of the bend. I think it was dropped in
shipment.

This misalignment is probably causing the problem. Any ideas? Could I bend the
unit back with the hydraulic press we have at work? Should I heat the column or
not?

Any ideas will be appreciated.
