You can use a 7" centres rod no problem, even on an 83mm. bore. The liner
clearance ceases to be a problem once you part off the bottom of the liner
that 's no longer needed 'cause the piston doesn't go there anymore!
I don't find any problems using long rods; the cam characteristics alter
slightly, and the pistons tend to slap about a little more. I never bothered
to weigh different combinations of piston & rod, so can't comment there.
It's certainly worth using a pop-up piston on engines of 87mm. and under to
save excessive skimming of the head.
Carrillo threw their prices through the roof on Feb. 1st. I just sold my
last set at the old price....
Maybe get a second opinion on the rods from an independent shop. I have had
Carrillos rescued that were nearly 0.010" out of round (!)
