I have been autocrossing a TR 6 with a 302 V8 for several years. I was able
to move the engine back far enough so I didn't have to move the steering rack
and was able to keep the front shock tower support. Most of the conversions
I have seen eliminated the front support which I don't think is a good idea.

You also need to be careful in selecting the V8. The Ford 302 weighs about
460-480 pounds stock - small block Chevy is about 100 lbs heavier and a lot
wider. The web site - www.team.net/sol/tech/engine.html has a list of engine
weights. I was able to get mine down to 375 lbs. (minus alternator and
headers) by installing aluminum heads, manifold and flywheel. I was able to
get
51% of the weight to the rear with the driver.

An easy solution for not trashing the TR dif and axles is to install a BMW 3
series rear. The BMW diff mount can be welded to the TR 6 frame and the TR 6
rear bearing flanges can be bored to take the BMW bearing. Have a set of
custom short axles made and you are ready to go. You have the original
suspension but a strong dif and CV joints. I have been reacing this setup for
2
years with a 302 pushing around 400hp with no problems.

I wasn't sure I would like the conversion but I have to say it is awesome to
drive. Plus the only thing I do to the motor every year is change the oil.
Anyone want to buy some TR 6 race motors ....
