Thanks to all the input on the figure 8 gaskets, I will tell the shop to
proceed with steel. And Bill, I'm putting in a new set of batteries in the
cattle prod. The TR3 has been on the shelf for a year (no racing stripes in
my nomex underwear); I'm starting to go through withdrawals.

I have made these sealing rings in various thickness.  If you look at the
surfaces that you need to seal. i.e. the flat in the block and the flat on
the sleeve -you can see that they are flat and smooth.  I can't see why
copper is inherently better at sealing than steel.  What I can say is that
there will likely be less galvanic effects and material such as brass or
copper will work  just fine. Even if the the copper were annealed dead soft
-I can't believe that the copper would compress and flatten out more than an
imperceptable amount.  

I once saved a cylinder sleave by machining .132" off the top and building a
series of individual coppper rings to bring the sleave to propper height.
There was still more than enough capture in the block.
