Or maybe someone just swapped the top from an earlier gearbox with the 
dip-stick onto this one.  I know that a late TR3A (TS 81551 L) that I 
restored had no dip-stick.  My own 1958 TR3A (TS 27489 LO) has the 
dip-stick.
