The valve springs should have some sort of bottom collar - but I'm not 
sure how important it is. Mk Is had an inner spring which held down a 
small ring which sat inside the outer spring. Mk IIs had a pressed metal 
"top hat" section. Cars with double springs should use a machined "top 
hat" section.
