I've seen valve float on the dyno.  Looks pretty much like what you descibe 
Dayle.

Pulls well until it hits a magic number, then all hell breaks loose.

Easy to check.  Pull a couple valve springs and check them...if you are a place 
with a chassis dyno, there should be a valve spring checker near by.

Back to back with a new set found about 40 lb difference.

Also, beware that I've found Isky has quit selling the good spring sets for the 
Spits.  We are trying to find a suitable alternative, but haven't come up with 
anything yet.
