I happen to have a copy of the FIA 1970 year book of Autombile sport. It is
the rule book published by the FIA. Advertisements all refer to the F1 Grand
Prix world championship. If I am not mistaken F1 became more prevelant when
Bernie Ecclestone took over marketing F1 in the early 80s. I have have Indy
programs from the 60s at which time Indy was part of the world championship
series. I looked at a few other race programs I have. The 1969 British GP
program says RAC British Grand Prix 19 July 1969 (no F1 on the cover). The
1971 British GP program also has no F1 on the cover. The 1971 French GP
program does not say Grand Prix but does say Formule 1 onthe cover. I have
the 1972 USGP program which says on the cover Grand Prix of the United
States. Formula 1 for the World Championship of Drivers. One thing that is
pretty cool about the programs is my 69 British GP program is signed by Jack
Brabham, Bruce McLaren, Chirs Amon, Jochen
Rindt, Piers Courage, Jo Siffert, Jacky Ickx and Denny Hulme. I got the
signatures myself at age 7. Jims email sparked me to look at the programs.
Thanks

Mike Mehl

Question;

At what point did we start
using F1 to describe the cars
in lieu of
Grand Prix.

Pre - wing cars would include
the Lotus 49 but exclude the
49B.
Or would it be pre-carbon
fiber & driver aid cars.
