My original 1995 Miata gel cell battery lasted like 13 years (in a 95
Miata, of course). I bought a replacement at the Mazda dealer
because I was so impressed with the longevity. They went to normal
lead / acid because of the SHORT life of the sealed gel cell ones -
the parts guy said that folks usually didn't get more than 3 years
out of them! They had a venting kit to keep the fumes out of the
trunk, so it was good to get the full dealer treatment anyway.

I've got an Optima gel cell in the race car and am extremely happy
with it, but lightweight is not a term I'd use to describe it.

I did discover that my alternator hadn't worked right for possibly a
year or two and I never noticed it at the track. Maybe it charged
slightly, but once I figured out what was going on I was REALLY
impressed by the Optima.
