Steve is an awesome source of knowledge but he is on a (hopefully
temporary) sabbatical from actually making stuff it seems.

Regardless, I think you have the nuts and bolts of the idea spelled out
from the few responses so far.
This is perhaps the most important part of building a better, stronger,
faster Gt6.
I have 3 totally different setups in my racecars all of which are very
different and all of which are race proven.
There is no right answer here.
The key point is that you need to (mostly) strengthen the outer axle and
the hub.
You can use parts from the Corvair, Datsun, TR6, Porsche or something
totally totally custom made.
In the green car, We have a monster torque (300lbs) custom made hub similar
to what Joe C. described.
Its huge (made of billet steel) and uses the same type of dual (large GT6)
bearings with a supporting spacer in between. The outer axle also is custom
and quite large.
Once you have a good hub and outer axle that can handle the torque and
stress, (there is no room for skimping here)
The rest of the assembly can fall on whats available and perhaps you may
have or source for at reasonable $.(that is why you will see Corvair,
Datsun, TR6 etc.)
In our case the hub/ outer axle was made to mate to the rotoflex and the
stock GT6 inner axle which is totally fine (cheap) and requires no extra
customization to the inner assemblies.

So initially, you asked the question that says you are on the right track.
A good machinist is in order.
The job should simply be to help you eliminate that weak link and help you
get it coordinated with what other parts you are using further inward
(that's more up to you and several types will work fine).
