You certainly can get scattered spark timing with a wobbly distributor, =
and it can be somewhat consistent. Less common with a magnetic trigger, =
though still possible. When setting timing on the old /5 BMW motorcycles =
you put a timing light on the flywheel mark and observed the jitter. =
Then turn the engine until the points open (one set of points for both =
coils=E2=80=94wasted spark system), note the marking on the cam, and =
cive a gentle rap to the cam with a copper rod and mallet. Recheck and =
see if the jutter got bigger or smaller. Always seemed whacky that =
something as precise as a beemer boxer motor would be so primitive, but =
it worked.=20

Makes a lot more sense that it was a head gasket leak.=20
