Okay, I&#39;ve been good. Honest I have. Busy, too. I&#39;ve been chained h=

<br>

<br>
Everybody knows Buckminster Fuller promoted and popularized the golf-ball s=

days on those home-makeover shows wife Carol enjoys so much) but he had som=

 to life as the Dymaxion (see below, getting our award at Amelia)<br>

Starting with the startlingly unusual (!!!), 3-wheeler/front-wheel-drive ch=
assis layout, which featured an ordinary Ford third member solid axle in fr=
ont (just like what you might find underneath the BACK end a 1933 Ford seda=
n), a Ford Flathead V8 kind of sitting in the middle driving those front wh=
eels and a single, tiller-style wheel in the back to steer the damn thing. =
Oh, the Dymaxion could turn on a dime and give you eight cents change, but =
the handling and road-holding were, umm, shall we say, &quot;unconventional=
?&quot; Sort of partway between a flat-front skiff with an over-sized outbo=
ard motor on the back and one of those carpet-covered-platform-and-brass-ra=
ils, bang-it-off-the-walls &quot;caster carts&quot; they give you to take y=
our effing luggage to your room at a Holiday Inn.<br>
<br>
Suffice to say that the very first Dymaxion (three were ultimately built) w=
as involved in a very serious accident--with fatalities--early on in its ca=
reer. But even so, its forward-thinking design attracted the interest of al=
l sorts of trendy, upper-crust, high-society, intellectual/influential weal=
thy-dilettante types. Including bucks-up playwright Clare Boothe Luce (her =
husband published Time, Life and Fortune magazines) and socialite Dorothy H=
ale (who jumped to her death four years later off a Manhattan skyscraper af=
ter failing to make it as an actress). Those two adventurous ladies took an=
 extended (and accident-free) trip around Connecticut in a Dymaxion in 1934=
 with Bucky Fuller&#39;s associate and project development engineer Isamu N=
oguchi doing the driving.<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
In any case, I don&#39;t think Karl Benz, Vittorio Jano, Dr. Ferdinand Pors=
che, Hans Ledwinka, Wilfredo Ricart, Colin Chapman, Smokey Yunick, Quin Epp=
erly, Bob McKee, Bill Sadler, Bob Riley, John Barnard, Adrian Newey or even=
 old Max Balchowsky (bonus trivia points if you know all fourteen of those =
guys without resorting to a google search) would have though very much of t=
he Dymaxion&#39;s chassis dynamics. Nonetheless, it&#39;s kind of a monumen=
t to old-fashioned American ingenuity and a certain type of strange, scienc=
e-fictiony theoretical conjuring. And I&#39;m thrilled that my good friends=
 at The Lane Museum decided to build a replica of it and put it on display =
where we can all see it, and even more thrilled that it won the &quot;Buddy=
 Palumbo&quot; award at Amelia this year. And extra kudos to museum founder=
 and sparkplug Jeff Lane, who [it says here] drove the damn thing down from=
 Nashville himself.<br>
<br>
And what a scary ride that must have been!<br>
By the way, if you&#39;re ever passing by or through Nashville, I heartily =
recommend visiting the LANE MOTOR MUSEUM&lt;<a href=3D"http://r20.rs6.net/t=

Other Stuff<br>
The new book continues to take shape (I think you&#39;ll like it) and we&#3=

e crik don&#39;t rise) at this years THE HAWK Vintage Race Meeting Extravag=
anza at Road America July 17-19. I hope.<br>
And that reminds me: we&#39;re still busily running up the old phone bill l=
ooking for sponsors and advertisers. It works like this:<br>
<br>
ADVERTISERS: Hey, if you&#39;d like to reach out to a focused, educated, kn=
owledgeable, mostly well-to-do (read: cash-in-hand) petrol-head audience (p=
lus a couple high school English classes, a bunch of library collections an=
d a few book clubs that took some bad advice somewhere along the line) with=
 an ad that will last damn near forever and get picked up and passed around=
 to friends long after those monthly magazines are tied up in bundles and t=
ossed in the trash bin,<br>
HAVE I GOT A DEAL FOR<br>
YOU!!!<br>
Ad rates are competitive (slightly less, even) than similar-audience monthl=

And that figures, since the track is Mosport (a place that I dearly love, e=
ven if it tends to shrink your balls up to the size of raisins) which sits =
a little ways northeast of Toronto. And the car I&#39;m in is the semi-famo=
us (at least in Canada) V.A.Y. Special, which was built to run in something=
 very intriguing &amp; unique called &quot;Canada Class&quot; racing.<br>
Launched in 1955, Canada Class was aimed at north-of-the-border racers with=
 little money, great ingenuity and long, long winters to putter around in t=
he garage. It was an entire class of low-buck, back-alley specials, and the=
 rules were that you had to take the basic components from a popular, readi=
ly available economy sedan that sold new for less than $2000. Although most=
 of the parts actually came from junkyards. It was a great class, real &quo=
t;budget racing&quot; and the V.A.Y. (which was originally based on Morris =
Minor components--including flathead motor and torsion-bar front suspension=
--although now it runs a Sprite 4-banger) won the class championship more t=
han once. It&#39;s a swell car to drive, too.<br>
The gent in the red hat (which, by the way, has &quot;VAY&quot; embroidered=
 right across the front of it, you dummies!) is Mike Rosen, who owned the c=
ar at the time and regularly drove the living snot out of it (he made it go=
 really fast whenever he got behind the wheel). Mike also served as one of =
the top guys in the Canadian=C2=A0 VARAC&lt;<a href=3D"http://r20.rs6.net/t=

The gentleman on the red scooter is the late, great Dick Baker, who was an =

The Kastner Cup 2015<br>
<br>
<br>
With the drop of the green flag for the 2015 Kastner Cup quickly approachin=
g, the angst builds. This will be an event to excite the senses of Triumph =
lovers throughout the area and promises to be an experience of epic proport=
ions. Nothing short of life altering.<br>
<br>
<br>
The Details:<br>
<br>
<br>
Kastner Cup 2015/Jefferson 500 Race Weekend<br>
<br>
May 14th ? May 17th, 2015<br>
<br>
Summit Point Motorsports Park, Summit Point, West Virginia<br>
<br>
Held in conjunction with the ever famous Jefferson 500 vintage race weekend=
 brought to you by VRG (Vintage Racing Group), the Kastner Cup is an exclus=
ive race for Triumph or Triumph powered vintage race prepared cars. Special=
 guest of honor Kas Kastner himself will make the decision of who will be s=
ubjugator of such a coveted prize as the Kastner Cup. His selection for the=
 Kastner Cup champion is based on track performance, presentation of the ca=
r, and enthusiasm in vintage racing and not necessarily the race winner. Th=
e champion is announced directly after the Kastner Cup?s checkered flag is =
brandished.<br>
<br>
<br>
The Jefferson 500:<br>
<br>
<br>
The Jefferson 500 race weekend promises to be packed full of vintage racing=
 and festivities. This year?s Grand Marshal is Brian Redman. The Jefferson =
500 has evolved into one of the most respected vintage races in the Northea=
st. For the past 20 years, it has consistently fielded 200 plus vintage rac=
ers eager to bask in the excitement that the Summit Point Circuit provides =
with upwards of 8 race groups. Triumphs are the featured Marque for the wee=
kend, feeling right at home on this curvilineal raceway. If you are a racer=
 and want to take advantage of the FREE open practice day (Thursday, May 14=
th), register on or before April 18th<br>
<br>
<br>
So far, registered entries for the Kastner Cup are as follows:<br>
<br>
4- TR3s, 12- TR4s, 2- TR250s, 6- TR6s, 9- GT6s, 15- Spitfires, 1- Herald, a=
nd 1- Peerless (Triumph powered)<br>
<br>
<br>
There are also performance based awards brought to you by Snook?s Dream Car=
s in the form of an exquisite beer stein with engraved classes on each awar=
d.<br>
<br>
<br>
Specials/Triumph Powered<br>
<br>
Triumph Sedans<br>
<br>
Spitfire<br>
<br>
GT6<br>
<br>
TR3<br>
<br>
TR4<br>
<br>
TR250/5/6<br>
<br>
<br>
A new addition to the prestigious class awards that adds a new element of c=
ompetition, and arguably the most important performance based award (aside =
from the Kastner Cup itself) is<br>
<br>
<br>
The Peggy Kastner Award<br>
<br>
<br>
This one is new to the award list and promises to be the prize that all the=
 racers want. We all want to impress the ladies, but to impress the first l=
ady of Triumph, the racers really need to be dressed to impress, bring thei=
r finest skills, and perform with all the right stuff. I imagine this award=
 will not be an easy one to win.<br>
<br>
If you are a spectator, there are many attractions to add to the vintage ra=
cing festivities. Starting with up close and personal ?old school? faciliti=
es with great points of view from just about every angle, full access to th=
e pits, cars, and racers, ample camping at the track, and of course an acco=
mpanying car show brought to you by Country Roads Car Club held in the back=
drop of the 1.7 mile Summit Point Circuit.<br>
<br>
<br>
Fourth Annual Country Roads Car Club Car Show<br>
<br>
<br>
May 16th, 2015 10:00 ? 4:00<br>
<br>
$15.00 Registration fee and track access through Gate #2<br>
<br>
There are coordinated lunchtime charity laps for the road cars in attendanc=
e. Three laps on track at noon for car show participants only. The cost is =
$10.00 with proceeds benefitting High Performance Heroes wounded Veterans t=
eam. A 50/50 drawing benefits Panhandle Free Clinic. Contact Chuck Tilley a=
t the car show registration booth at Gate #2 for details. There will be a T=
riumph section at the car show as well. A great place to meet if you are in=
 an area club. Expected are Triumph and British car clubs from many states =
around the area and all over the US.<br>

For those of you who have been to Summit Point before, here&#39;s an aerial=

Please let me know by email if your rig is bigger than a pickup truck and a=
 typical 16-25&#39; trailer.<br>
Track will open to entrants about 5 PM on Weds evening.=C2=A0 Paddock spots=
 are first come, first served, though if you have a bigger rig, I&#39;ll pu=

Hello Friends,<br>
Please view this link to my video from last Saturday&#39;s timed practice a=
t Sonoma.<br>
I had a blast driving in traffic with close to 50 cars in the field.=C2=A0 =
My TR3 is performing well.=C2=A0 This is my 3rd weekend of racing and the c=
ar has an equivalent of 5 weekends on it now with the 2 Hooked on Driving t=
rack days.=C2=A0 Besides the past axle seal issue, I&#39;ve only been addin=
g gas and checking tire pressures.=C2=A0 I enjoy driving on the street from=
 time to time too.=C2=A0 That&#39;s one way I work things out before I get =
to the track.<br>

<br>
The Kastner Cup 2015With the drop of the green flag for the 2015 Kastner Cu=
p quickly approaching, the angst builds. This will be an event to excite th=
e senses of Triumph lovers throughout the area and promises to be an experi=
ence of epic proportions. Nothing short of life altering.The Details:Kastne=
r Cup 2015/Jefferson 500 Race Weekend<br>
May 14th ? May 17th, 2015<br>
Summit Point Motorsports Park, Summit Point, West Virginia<br>
Th=
e champion is announced directly after the Kastner Cup?s checkered flag is =
brandished.The Jefferson 500:The Jefferson 500 race weekend promises to be =
packed full of vintage racing and festivities. This year?s Grand Marshal is=
 Brian Redman. The Jefferson 500 has evolved into one of the most respected=
 vintage races in the Northeast. For the past 20 years, it has consistently=
 fielded 200 plus vintage racers eager to bask in the excitement that the S=
ummit Point Circuit pro<br>
=C2=A0vides with upwards of 8 race groups. Triumphs are the featured Marque=
 for the weekend, feeling right at home on this curvilineal raceway. If you=
 are a racer and want to take advantage of the FREE open practice day (Thur=
sday, May 14th), register on or before April 18thSo far, registered entries=
 for the Kastner Cup are as follows:<br>

nd 1- Peerless (Triumph powered)The Peggy Kastner Performance Awards:The pr=
estigious class performance awards add an element of competition, and argua=
bly the most important performance based awards aside from the Kastner Cup =
itself. These are performance based awards brought to you by Snook?s Dream =
Cars with engraved classes on each award.Specials/Triumph Powered<br>

nt to impress the ladies, but to impress the first lady of Triumph, the rac=
ers really need to be dressed to impress, bring their finest skills, and pe=
rform with all the right stuff. I imagine these awards will not be easy to =
win.If you are a spectator, there are many attractions to add to the vintag=
e racing festivities. Starting with up close and personal ?old school? faci=
lities with great points of view from just about every angle, full access t=
o the pits, cars, and racers, ample camping at the track, and of course an =
accompanying car show brought to you by Country Roads Car Club held in the =

Russ Moore reminded me to pass along a few things:<br>
Power is available, including hook-ups for motorhomes, on pedestals through=
out the paddock. Cost for the weekend is $40, then $20 returned when you tu=
rn in the lock and key for a net of $20.<br>
Fuel is available but is credit card only. All grades and leaded race fuel.=
<br>
Oil dump on site is available.<br>
No restrictions on tents.<br>
There are decent showers at the track in a couple of locations.<br>
There&#39;s a pretty good cafe for breakfast and lunch, and ice.<br>
There&#39;s a race shop, OG Racing<br>
Tire service at the track through Sasco Sports - 434-822-7200<br>

We&#39;re flying over to record all the action at the Kastner Cup next mont=
h with the intention of producing a similar racing documentary to &quot;Tri=
umph At The Nurburgring&quot; which many of you will have seen last year.=
=C2=A0 I&#39;ve been talking to Joe, Shawn and Scott for some time about wh=
at we hope to achieve and to make it a reality it will be necessary to have=
 several competitors let me have a copy of their in-car camera videos.=C2=
=A0 Perhaps then we will be able to cover every piece of action out on trac=
k as we cut from one camera to another.=C2=A0 We will have a couple of came=
ras in prime locations trackside so all together it should make for somethi=
ng pretty special.=C2=A0 So it&#39;s up to you chaps - please help us make =
this happen.<br>
<br>
For those that haven&#39;t seen any of the Nurburgring DVD, or even heard o=
f it you&#39;ll get an idea from the attached preview - <a href=3D"https://=
www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Dci-hDRBRpO0" target=3D"_blank">https://www.youtub=
e.com/watch?v=3Dci-hDRBRpO0</a><br>
We had a fabulous time making that one, even going back to the track at 1am=
 with Chris Marx to meet the welder who had come half way across the countr=
y in an attempt to get the TR8 onto the starting grid.=C2=A0 No sleep that =
night!=C2=A0 Hard to believe it was a year ago next month.<br>
