While I generally like JC, I=E2=80=99m not sure he=E2=80=99s placing the bla=
me in the right place.=20

The stewards are just the arbiters of the rules placed in front of them. The=
y, of course have some leeway, but, by and large, they are there to enforce a=
nd adjudicate disputes over the rules placed in front of them.=20

I don=E2=80=99t envy them.=20

Likewise the sanctioning body has a hard job. Balancing sponsorship opportun=
ities for teams, market share, TV revenue, attendance numbers, manufacturers=
 interests, etc isn=E2=80=99t easy. Oh and then there are the little things l=
ike making the racing safe but interesting.=20

One could argue that F1 was at its heyday when they killed a driver or two a=
 year and teams sold off parts at the end of the season to get enough money t=
o get home.=20

Similarly, what were some of the best racing seasons in any formula? 1967 F1=
? CanAm? F5000? GTP? Seems to me all of those were killed off by too much mo=
ney, too many rules, dominance by too few, or some combination of all of tha=
t.=20

To bring it closer to home, most of us race some variation of Production car=
s, another all but dead class.=20

So think about your answer to the following question: you can choose to be i=
n a car at the back of any season, any class,  any season. Which one would y=
ou pick?
