Hi Scott,

If it is a recirculating ball steering box, this is what a lot of people use=
 for lube when rebuilding.

https://www.amazon.com/John-Deere-Corn-Head-Grease/dp/B00CSBOLL8/ref=3Dsr_1_=
1?dchild=3D1&keywords=3Djohn+deere+corn+head+grease&qid=3D1590260015&sr=3D8-=
1

It=E2=80=99s kind of in between grease and oil in that it stays in contact w=
ith the parts that need lube but doesn=E2=80=99t leak past the seals. Gear o=
il will probably leak past the seals and grease will =E2=80=9Cchannel.=E2=80=
=9D I think that means the moving parts will move the grease out of the way=
and not allow it to lube properly.

Sounds like a fun project. Good luck!

Chuck

had the oil weights reversed winter and summer, so summer, 30w, winter 20w,=
though the manual says I can probably continue using 20W all summer. The o=
iling system is definitely splash at low speeds, with =E2=80=9Cdippers=E2=80=
=9D attached to each connecting rod big end that scoop up some oil and direc=
t it at the rod bearings. At higher speeds, there=E2=80=99s a pipe and nozz=

a special =E2=80=9Ctarget=E2=80=9D jig where one can adjust the nozzles to h=

I=E2=80=99m going to check. It also says =E2=80=9Cuse a lube that will no=

ing the steering box - the directions start with =E2=80=9Cremove the steerin=
g wheel=E2=80=9D and go on from there. However, steering is quite loose and=
there are three separate lash adjustments, according to the manual, so it=E2=

for battery acids, blood, candy, chewing gum, paint and lacquer, fruits, gr=
ease and oil, ice cream, writing ink, iron rust, lipstick, tar and water spo=

As new it probably did not use detergent motor oil, and a straight 30 in s=
ummer would be the correct grade. Over time there is no way to know what wa=
s dumped in that crankcase, so a non detergent oil would be a safe bet. If t=
he car came with service records it may shed some light on things. Also, do r=
emember that the rods are splash oiled on a Chevy six of that era, so drive h=
er gently. Full pressure oiling did not happen till 1953 or 1954 ish. If y=
ou ever have the engine rebuilt, then a good modern multi grade oil, with hi=
gh levels of ZDDP, is the way to go, just like our racing TRs.
> =20
> As to the gear box, diff, and steering box. Any good non synthetic gear l=
ube of the appropriate grade will be just fine. Most modern gear oils are 8=
5w90, and that=E2=80=99s OK. The steering box is always an issue as usually=
, if they are original, they are pretty much guaranteed to leak around every=
place they can leak, and hence will not hold liquid lubes for long, without=
 a rebuild. The =E2=80=9CAll Purpose=E2=80=9D thing is curious. It=E2=80=99=
s possible that they either mean gear oil or grease. I know one of the =E2=80=
=9Cwork arounds=E2=80=9D that old timers, and some not so old timers use on e=
arly Fords if the box wont hold gear lube, is to pack it with wheel bearing g=
rease. It=E2=80=99s still a frequent practice, as getting the steering gear=
out of these older machines is fiddly at best and downright difficult in mo=
st cases. =20
> =20
> A word about those old drum brakes. If you have a really good brake shop n=
ear you, make sure to have the drums trued and have the new shoes arced (mat=
ched) to the drums. This will save many headaches in getting the thing to st=
op without pulling you into the ditch or oncoming traffic. Also on the subj=
ect of brakes, if you are going to put in new wheel cylinders, no matter who=
you get them from, they all come from China, disassemble them and make sure=
that the seals are proper lubed with a brake assembly lube, and make sure t=
hat the hydraulic line port and the bleeder port are actually drilled all th=
e way through. Really, this is a thing. I have had several wheel cylinders=
from big name =E2=80=9Creputable=E2=80=9D manufacturers that have not had t=
he ports properly drilled through the casting, or had the bleeder screw seat=
ing surface not be concentric with the threads for the screw. It=E2=80=99s m=
uch easier to check them first, than after you have them on the car and all t=
he shoes/linkages attached.
