Subject: I Need

I Need.......my kids use these two words a lot with fairly good results, so I 
thought I'd try it.  I need two items.  If any of you can help out, I'd be much 
abliged.  

Item #1) Somewhere I have misplaced one of my rear brake adjuster pistons (for 
lack of a better descriptive word at the moment) for my BN4, and my parts 
sources don't seem to carry them.  Are these available anywhere?  

Item #2) I have apparently misplaced the distributor drive spindle (for lack of 
a better descriptive word at the moment) from my tach gear housing.  This is 
the little shaft inside the housing that connects to the distributor shaft end. 
 Are these available anywhere?

If anyone just happens to have any one of these two items laying around the 
garage with no purpose, I'll pay the going rate.

A Speedt Sleeve or a Redi Sleeve should solve your problem. (Can't help you
with the size though... but a good bearing house should be able to figure it

I bought one of these sockets off the shelf at Sears. Part number 47791
12 point 3/4 drive Craftsman socket. Check out www.sears.com and search
for 47791 in their tool area. Don't forget the adapter so it'll fit on
your 1/2" drives.

I've been oiff the list for a while, but just subscribed again.  I could use 
some help.  I have a lot of static in the radio on my BJ8.  I thought it 
might be from the generator, but disconnected the field wire and still have 
the static.  I'm sure it is from the ignition someplace.  I've put on new 
wires but no help.  can anyone tell me the most likely source?

Faster access to check the oil, perhaps.  The alloy-bodied Jaguar E-type 
raced at Sebring had a small port in the hood/bonnet for that purpose -- 
remember, otherwise you'd have to unfasten and tip up that large bonnet.  
We're doing further research on this rare car in hopes of publishing it in 
next year's April issue, that comes out on the first of that month.

Herewith a reply I gave to an earlier similar enquiry. Some may think 
this is obvious, but it can be overlooked if you don't know about it - 
and how many of have the instruction manuals for our 60's radios?! I 
think this applies to most period radios, though some may have the 
trimmer accessed in another way. You must do this with the aerial 
extended fully as you would use it.

If you pull off the tuning knob, and look carefully, you will see beside 
the spindle a small slot with a slotted screw in it. This is the aerial 
trimmer (a variable capacitor) and is used to match your aerial to the 
input circuit. Try turning this with a small screwdriver (preferably 
with a plastic blade - home-made?) to optimise your signal. Turn it 
clockwise first and it will eventually reach the end of its travel, then 
back it off from there. Too far anti-clockwise and the screw might drop 
out, but it will turn several revolutions without problem.

The effect is not perfect over the band, and will be different for long 
wave, so find a compromise or optimise it for your favourite programme.

This can make a dramatic difference. Hope this helps.

There could of course be a myriad of other things causing the problem - 
all you can do is optimise everything (especially earthing) and get the 
noise to acceptable levels.

I have a negative-earth radio fitted in a positive-earth BJ8, connected 
by use of the polarity converter module from Antique Automobile Radio 
(Florida). I am pretty sure that this, by its very nature, is providing 
a bit of power-borne interference filtering, since the radio supply is 
not directly connected to the battery.

Anyone care to support or dismiss this theory?

Subject: overdrive solenoid windings

I have a question about the O-drive solenoid. Being the type who would
rather repair something if I can, I decided to take a look at my dead
solenoid.

My question is in regard to the windings of the solenoid coil. There's a
contact inside the unit. My assumption is that initially, the contact is
closed. This must connect to a pull-in winding. Once the unit engages, the
contact opens, and then the solenoid maintains engagement with the main
winding. Kinda like the starting windings on an electric motor. If you left
the pull-in winding on all the time, it would go up in smoke in no time.

I have my oroginal solenoid, and a spare that I had from a parts car of many
years ago. Both seem to act the same way. If the contact is closed, and I
energize the unit, it pulls in fine. But then the contacts open and there's
no holding power at all....on either unit. I have both units open, and on
the bench.

So...is it as I described? A pull-in winding, and a hold winding?

It is indeed two windings - pull and hold, and both are working during 
the pull phase. The pull winding has a resistance of around half an ohm, 
so it takes over 20 amps for a fraction of a second (amounting to over a 
quarter of a kilowatt of power!). The hold winding is around 11 ohms, so 
takes just an amp or so, and thus has much less power.

When my O/D started playing up, it turned out that the contacts were not 
clean enough to make good contact every time, so it was occasionally 
trying to pull on the hold winding (and failing). Cleaning, and 
lubricating the contacts with contact cleaner, is all that was required.

An ohm-meter that reads down to a fraction of an ohm is a very useful 
tool for checking the O/D, to measure the resistance of each winding and 
also the contacts for zero resistance when closed.

When you say the solenoid had no holding power at all, do you mean that 
it drops out? If so, it would clack in and out continually, as it would 
drop out and reconnect the pull winding, and pull in again. If the hold 
winding has a resistance of 10-12 ohms, and takes around an amp when 
connected, that suggests that it is working correctly (whatever your 
opinion of its pulling power!).

I topped my BJ8 with 1.5 quarts of oil before heading off for Tahoe. I drove
500 miles round trip and had to add a full quart yesterday.  I never, I mean
never, have to add oil between changes. She normally doesn't leak or burn
oil (at least visibly). So, where did all that oil go? Was it a combination
of the heat of the drive through the Valley, the mountains and the altitude?
I didn't adjust the carbs the whole time and it was running a bit rough up
there. Thanks for enlightening me.  BTW, we had a blast in Tahoe. A lifetime
experience.

What do you mean when you say "I topped by BJ8 with 1.5 quarts of oil before 
heading off for Tahoe?"  You added 1.5 quarts beyond the full make?  Or it 
was 1.5 quarts low (you say it doesn't use oil, so I'm not sure how it would 
be 1.5 quarts low) and you add to bring the level up to full?  
If you overfilled by 1.5 quarts, it probably threw it off?

Subject: Post-Tahoe, continued: "Be careful what you wish for"

After getting on the road we decided to cancel out on Solvang (I knew from a 
previous visit that is rather corny) and go to Santa Barbara instead, but I 
am writing this from a hotel in Agoura Hills (Thousand Oaks area)--here's 
what happened:

I pulled into a gas station in the Morro Bay area and filled up, then headed 
back onto route 1.  As soon as I shifted into second (I have a 3-speed 
tranny) I heard a new noise, a very loud ratcheting sound.  You guessed it--I 
broke a tooth on second gear, something which I am told that BN1's are known 
for doing.  First was fine as  was third, and OD was functional--I checked my 
quick diagnosis out with a person who knows our cars and he agreed.  So here 
I am on the other coast of the US (I drove out from Maryland, you'll 
remember) with a broken second gear.  WHAT TO DO???

At last year's conclave I attended "Smitty's" seminar on his five-speed 
conversion and decided then that it would be a worthwhile alternative if I 
ever had the need.  And this mornng I found myself "in need" and about 175 
miles from his shop.  I called Smitty and it so happened that Jim Albrecht 
was there--only the night before he had suggested in an email that I stop in 
on he and Shirley on my way south.  So to make a long (but unfinished) story 
short, I got onto 101 and travelled the 150 or so miles to Thousand Oaks in 
third gear.

Mary and  I are now ensconsed in some nice digs nearby Smitty's shop and 
tomorrow Jim and I will remove my transmission and start installing a 
five-speed that is on hand.  I'm not sure when I can get the driveline made 
up and so will not know until tomorrow or the next day when I will be back on 
the road, but I have again had another soft landing into the hands of helpful 
Healey enthusiasts.  

Jim and Shirley are coming by in about 30 minutes to pick us up for dinner.
More news as it breaks tomorrow.

Subject: Healey service needed-St. Louis eastward

The "Snake River Canyon Incident" guy here.

Chris and I are on the road eastward, returning solo from OR2002 (what a 
fantastic experience), now between Kansas City, MO and St. Louis on I-70  
Tomorrow I'm headed through St. Louis to Nashville via I64, I57, I24,  and 
from there I40 I26 US74 to Charlotte NC.  My OD went out in western Kansas 
earlier today, so I experienced the width of Kansas at 50-55 mph (3.90 
gearset and all).  At 55mph east-bound I actually enjoyed Kansas!

I'm traveling ok, but if OD is merely an adjustment problem, I'd love to get 
repaired and back on the road with OD functional to finish the remaining 
1000+- miles.  I've put 3500+ miles on the car after the Snake River Canyon 
oil pan/OD casing incident (see old posts if interested) with overdrive 
operating fine, with 3000 miles before that since June 14.  Oil level has 
been checked frequently due to patch on OD casing.  I've reviewed diagnostics 
in the manual, but I cannot service on the road in a "borrowed" lift bay.

Can anyone recommend a good Healey-experienced shop anywhere in the St. Louis 
area?  Much obliged.

Respond off-list if possible tonite, I'll check later tonite and tomorrow AM 
early before heading out (6AM Central).

I'm not as vgilant as I should be. Never the less, where is that oil going?
Oil pressure guage shows fine. No oil on the engine or under the hood. No

Well, now that someone's been brave enough to ask the question, here's a 
similar situation:

Checked the oil before leaving home, it measured full.  Got to Tahoe going up 
101 (the long, scenic route) from Orange County (600+ miles?), was down two 
quarts (should have checked it earlier, I know).  Added two quarts at Tahoe, 
checked it before leaving for home down Highway 1 and 101, it was full.  Got 
home and checked the oil - it was still full; I was so surprised, I double 
checked and didn't mis-read it.  My car's a BN1, I've had it 27 years, engine 
has never been rebuilt.  Didn't have any trouble with carbs at Tahoe, didn't 
have to have them adjusted, the car ran fine, started the first time every 
time.  At home, use the car regularly, check and add 1/2 to 1 quart 
occasionally, don't keep track of how many miles, but it's not an excessive 
amount of oil consumption.  I figure it had something to do with going uphill 
on the way to Tahoe and downhill on the way home.  Just a theory!
