Brian -

you can try one of those rubber strap wrenches you can
get at Sears (although I find these a little fiddly at
times)... if that doesn't work you can use a large set
of water pump pliers on the collar with a towel
wrapped around the collar to protect the finish.  I've
used this in the past with very good results... it
comes undone very easily this way... so you don't need
to squeeze the pliers too hard.
