Mechanical Advance Mechanism

I suspect that the springs on the mechanical advance are weak, because the
mechanism seems starts to activate at slightly under 500 rpm instead of at
around 600 rpm that I have seen quoted elsewhere on this list.  A friend said
an early advance was not necessarily a bad thing and suggested I do nothing
about it.

Is there a definitive test for weak springs or.....?
