I would highly recommend upgrading to Windows XP, it is a
significantly better operating system than 98, which is prone to
crashing and failures like you describe.  Of course, you may have to
upgrade your PC in the process if you have a very old machine.

Another cheaper option (free option, in fact) is to try Thunderbird
which is a free and very good email client (better than Outlook/O.
Exress frankly).  Outlook is a great program for servers and offices,
but if you are looking for something that is for your personal use
Thunderbird is much better:

Another advantage to using Thunderbird is it is immune to viruses by design.

Give it a try and maybe that will solve your problem.
