Bill,
This is usually due to air getting into the exhaust system. I eliminated
deceleration backfiring by sealing some small holes in the resonator
(not muffler) on my BJ8. I used stick epoxy/steel.
Mixture(s) too lean causes backfiring through the carburettors.
