There are several sources for six-volt batteries, including Moss -- which
supplies an obviously pseudo version (what's the point in installing a
six-volt if
it doesn't have the original appearance?); Antique Batteries which makes a
Lucas reproduction, complete with fake-tar top -- they claim that earlier
problems
of sealing between the top and the sides have been rectified and the new
batteries won't leak; and Interstate, which makes a pretty neat six-volt with
a
classic appearance, but all modern technology and materials (and it comes
filled
and charged from any Interstate dealer).
Obviously if you don't care about appearance (and how many people beyond
concours judges EVER look under your battery door anyhow?) the best bet is to
install a nice-sized modern 12-volt in place of the battery on the passenger
side
of the car. You could even, in that case, make a container for the other side
into which you could put some cumbersome and weighty spare parts for that
really long trip, such as a starter and generator. After all, the repro six
volt
batteries are a pain to deal with since they have to be filled and charged by
the installer, not to mention being expensive, and the Interstates, while
excellent batteries, are also expensive.
