Ermey was originally hired as a minor technical consultant /  dialogue coach 
for the movie "Full Metal Jacket." He was hired to  coach the actor playing 
the DI. The story goes that on the day of filming  the actor kept missing his 
lines and Ermey got fed up and did a twenty  minute rant that was better than 
the script. Ermey then got the part  and a career was born.
