Hi -

It's a little hard for us to give advise without some indication of
where and how the problem is showing itself.

If I understand correctly, your problem is one of clearance between
the headers and your steering column.

If so, you can go two routes with this:

1) get good quality header tape and header blankets and wrap your
headers with this stuff. It will keep the heat away from your carbs
and also help reduce heat under the bonnet. With some exhaust systems
(esp. mild steel) wrapping the headers in tape and blankets can cause
faster deterioration of the mufflers etc... but with an SS set up it
should be ok.

2) take your existing heat shield and remove the asbestos sheet. Once
you've done that, then you can fit up the shield and check where you
have a clearance problem. Once you can eyball it, then you can try
cutting the asbestos sheet in the aear of tight clearance, and then
maybe use some good quality header blanket material (something
flexible) and squeeze that in where the clearance is tight.

Hope that helps,

Alan
