Hi Ned,
If you are changing the lay shaft change the needle rollers. The smears on
the old shaft will have damaged them and they are cheap. If the syncro rings
are sintered steel rather than the bronze used in the earlier BJ8s be sure
to check the fit of the replacements on the cones of the gears to ensure
that the cone clutch action works. Sometimes the surface of the cone on the
gears can be worn away sufficiently that the syncro action is ineffective.
Since you have the gearbox out I would strongly recommend taking a look at
the overdrive accumulator. Scoring of the bore or piston is a common cause
of overdrive problems and it is a lot easier to access while out of the car.

Further inspection, encouraged by Rich Chrysler, revealed that I need all
three syncro rings. The lay shaft has some "smears" on it so I will get that
too. The roller and needle bearings appear to be good.

Anything else I should look at?
