Mark,
I posted this to the group twice before but it never went through.

Regarding the loose outside leaf on new rear springs:

I had the same problem with the new Daur springs I bought from Cape.

I put an 1/8" aluminum shim between the top of the first shackle in from the
end and the top leaf. I used a C-Clamp to tighten the spring together in
order to get the bolt thru the holes in the shackle with the shim in place.

The aluminum is 1" wide so there's enough to bend a 1/8" retaining edge up
on either side of the shackle strap.

In addition, the first shackle out from the center has more than enough
clearance to accommodate another leaf. So I upgraded mine by including a 2nd
19.5 " leaf ( leftover from the original spring) in the new spring. The
stiffer springs make the car ride slightly higher.

I'd be curious if any of the engineer types think the effect of having 2
identical leaves in the spring will cause any undesirable strain at the edge
of the double-thick leaf.
