Have been following previous threads concerning NAPA and similar
electronic fuel pumps to use with/instead of our wonderful-but quirky
Lucas pumps as mine has been tempermental recently. It is not the
points because I put a power transister in it 6 years ago - more like
the coil is getting weak and it has a hard time starting up at first.
Runs fine once it gets going - any ideas?
Anyway - I liked the idea of a modern pump in line with the Lucas but I
did not want to re-rout, re-bend or re-place the original solid lines
that have so well served my 66 BJ8 for 40 years now, plus I tend to
avoid disturbing anything that doesn't absolutely require disturbance.
I found at our local Advance Auto (here in Roanoke Va.) a Carter P60504
inline electric fuel pump that has the end fittings that you insert into
your fuel line and clamp, just like an inline fuel filter. In fact, the
pump comes with an attached filter on the inlet side. It is about 1 3/4
inches in diameter and about 4 inches ling. With the piece of hose
between them and the attached filter included, it totals out at about 9
inches. I already had a small filter inline on the flexible section of
hose in the engine compartment, so I just removed it, inserted this in
its place and ran a couple of wires up to the key-on section of the
fuse block. It has separate insulated spade lugs for the electrical
connections, so you could use it on either a pos or neg grounded
vehicle. Comes with a mounting strap, two spade lug connectors and two
hose clamps. The instructions say that it is a pusher, and needs to be
mounted close to the tank, but mine had no trouble sucking gas through
the balking Lucas Pump. Maximum pressure per specs is around 4 pounds.
Cost was $53 and change. The whole thing could disappear in about 3
minutes if I want to replace the Lucas Pump and go concours.
