Joe,
Sounds like your new fuel pump isn't adjusted quite right.  If just a little 
off, it will often pump a few times and then stop or pump erratic.  I've 
found that sometimes new SU fuel pumps are not adjusted properly when you 
get them and have had the same problem with replacement point sets for SU 
fuel pumps.
What you should do is check the points adjustment and the diaphragm 
adjustment as delineated in the attached page 261 from Norm Nock's Austin 
Healey Tech Talk book.  I've placed a little arrow beside the two 
instruction sections.  These two items need to be adjusted pretty much right 
on.  You'll need a feeler gauge.
