Just to add to the statistical info:
While David Nock at British Car Specialists does not normally install
electronic ignition systems, in contrast Jason Len at XKs Unlimited, which does
a lot
of restoration work and has built some neat Healeys in addition to its work
on Jaguars, says in the past six-eight years he has installed electronic
ignitions in every single car that has gone through his restoration shop, and
has
never had a failure.

In a conversation with David yesterday, we definitely agreed on one thing:
don't deal piecemeal with your ignition system. If you're going to upgrade any
part of it, upgrade all of it, because the better the rest of the system
operates (e.g. higher voltage from Sport Coils, or longer-duration sparks from
electronic ignitions), the more likely a small flaw in another component will
cause
a failure.
So, if you do install a sport coil or an electronic ignition, then you should
also install new spark plug wires, high quality spark plug terminals, a new
distributor cap, and a new, high-quality rotor, as well as new spark plugs, of
course.
Just my two-pence
Cheers
Gary
