Bill, it would appear that the problem is with the hub adapters rather than
the dust cap. About a year ago it was reported that one of the vendors was
selling hub adapters with the bearing race cavities oversized so that the
bearing races were too loose. Knowing that, I purchased my hub adapters
from another source and from then on I had an annoying chirp from my right
front wheel due to the brake pads binding on the rotor during part of the
rotation, even after having the rotor turned twice on a lathe. The
conclusion is that the bearing cavities in the new hub, while not oversized,
are apparently also not machined correctly. The chirp and the rotor wobble
immediately disappeared with the same bearings and rotor in my old hub.
Somebody out there is having trouble machining the hubs the way they did
40 - 50 years ago. Mine, by the way, were manufactured in Brazil.

I put a new front hub stub on today that I purchased from one of our
regular vendors. When I went to insert the old dust cap found it will
not fit in the stub. The ID of the new stub is smaller than the 47
year old original stub so the cap cannot go into its place. The vendor
suggested I grind down the outside of the cap which I have done to make
it smaller,but now I am getting to the point where I do not want to
take anymore off the cap. Has anyone else run into this problem and if
so whats the answer. Will the new caps fit into these new hubs. When
I did the other front one last winter had no problem.
