Ah, there's the rub.
Talking with Hagerty, I asked what the relationship was between the classic
car company and the company writing the standard policy -- note that you have
to have regular insurance on a regular car before Hagerty or the other classic
car companies will cover your classic car with their policy.
He said that the proviso is there, in part, to make sure that in the event of
a liability claim on another car that the classic car owner might be driving,
there is a mainline insurance company to step in and protect the owner
against that liability claim.
In non-legal terms, as I understand that, if you hit someone with your
Healey, your classic car company might be able to protect you, but if you hit
someone with one of your other cars, then your regular company would step in
to
protect you, rather than your classic car company.

BTW, at this stage in this discussion, I'm going to opt out and start trying
to boil all this down to 2000 words for an article. I strongly encourage
anyone who is confused or concerned, to pick up the phone, dial the number on
the
wallet cards for their insurance companies, and ask their own insurance
company
to explain everything that isn't absolutely clear. Don't wait until you're
involved in an accident to try to sort it all out.

Cheers
Gary
