John,

Sounds like you have a BN4 series gearbox which will also have a taller 2nd 
gear ratio. I wouldn't worry about the exposed solenoid area unless you care 
about the appearance of originality when the gearbox cover is off!
The stem of the solenoid should have a bellows style rubber boot to keep the 
solenoid barrel protected.
