If the block was not cleaned correctly there could be some residual  
oil in the block from the machine work. Since there is no sign of  
water in the oil I would say there probably is not any problem with  
cracks. The head gasket will only fit on one way.  I would first try  
some radiator flush cleaner then run water only for a while and flush  
the system several times.
