Sorry to raise an issue and not be able to follow it through to resolution.
I've still got the problem, but I'm not going to be able to fix it before
leaving for Southeastern in the morning.  Too many other things to do.

That's not the way it works. The wiring outside the relay is such that 
when you energize the relay it will provide currency to hold itself. 
When you step on the accelerator pedal the cut out switch will break 
this currency so that the relay cuts off. In fact, it's nothing special, 
you can use any relay you have on the shelf, it doesn't matter.
