Actually the "DOT 4" is the important thing. That is the industry standard for
low moisture activity brake fluid. DOT 4 is used in brake systems using
natural rubber, as opposed to synthetic rubber, seals. All glycol based brake
fluid is hygroscopic. That is it tends to entrain moisture. Water affects
natural rubber more than synthetic rubber and requires a "dryer" fluid. Using
DOT 3 fluid allows more entrained moisture and causes natural rubber seals to
swell and break down.
DOT 5 fluids are silicon based and are not hygroscopic.
