I did a similar drive in a petrol powered series III 88. Fort Benning to
Sebring, FL and then to Albuquerque. A diesel 109 will probably be capable of
60 mph on the flat once it gets rolling. Downhill you can keep up pretty well.
Over the continental divide you may need to get out and drive stakes to check
your progress. Best practice is to avoid the interstates if possible. You will
be more comfortable on a good secondary road and your progress won't suffer
much. Take your time. You will have plenty of time to enjoy the view.
