For awhile, I had a sort of oil seal in my MGA patterned after the old Ford
seal, which used the packing cord for the seal. We tried replacing it with
teflon, which turned out to be a very bad idea -- broke down within one race
session. Talking to a specialist in this kind of thing, he suggested Viton
o-rings. Seriously good stuff. More resilient than rubber and impervious to
gasoline and oil.
We went to a company that specialized in o-rings. All they need to know is
the desired size (thickness and diameter, and the material) and they had it
in stock.
Don't know if it would work in this case, but worth considering.
